BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida lawyer has filed a civil lawsuit against Donald Trump in which he argues that the former president is ineligible for office. When asked why he is suing, Boynton Beach-based attorney Lawrence Caplan said on Friday it’s all laid out in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.Caplan added other lawsuits may follow.“I’m not political. I’ve voted for both Democratic and Republican presidents,” he said.He may not be overly political, but Caplan said he has concerns if Trump becomes president of the United States again.“I think we’ll be looking at the end of American democracy as we’ve come to know it,” he said. “There’s no hard and fast rule that says that a democracy has to last forever.”Which is why the attorney said he filed a lawsuit to prevent Trump from running. His reasoning? Trump’s federal indictment following the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Cap...Will US politicians ban their best way of reaching young voters?

It’s just days before the 2022 midterm election that has professional Democrats fretting about a “red wave,” and though she’s new to politics, Thao Nguyen is confidently nailing all of her marks. The Atlanta-based college student is filming in her mom’s Honda while back home visiting in Michigan, the sort of caught-in-the-middle-of-real-life setting that TikTok seems to eat up. Plus the natural light does wonders for the skin.Nguyen — known as @_nguyenthaoo to her 334,000 followers — is making the latest in her series of #redflags videos, listing the behavior she considers warning signs in a person. One, openly hating on certain fast-food side items: “You know McDonald’s French fries hit different.” Two, only listening to one type of music: “What’s the point of being friends with you if don’t even know, like, old Disney pop songs?” And lastly, being uninterested in politics or voting: “Like, at your big age, you don’t really care about what’s going on around you? By REBECCA BOONE, BEATRICE DUPUY, GENE JOHNSON and JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER (Associated Press)HONOLULU (AP) — Within a day of Maui County releasing 388 names of people unaccounted for following the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century, more than 100 of them or their relatives came forward to say they’re safe, the FBI said Friday. The agency is reviewing the information they provided and working to remove the names from the list.“We’re very thankful for the people who have reached out by phone or email,” Steven Merrill, the FBI’s special agent in charge in Honolulu, said in a news conference. “As we get someone off of a list, this has enabled us to devote more resources to those who are still on the list.”Several people on the list told The Associated Press earlier in the day that they are alive and well, with a few also saying they were confused or frustrated to be on it. At least two others were among the victims of the fire &...Shohei Ohtani, Angels take down Kodai Senga, Mets in series opener

It was a matchup anticipated halfway around the world: Kodai Senga vs. Shohei Ohtani. There was a buzz in the air that hadn’t been felt at Citi Field since back in May when the Mets still had hope for the season. Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels did too, for that matter, and they’re still hoping for a miracle, but they can keep hoping after a 3-1 win over the Mets on Friday night.Ohtani won the matchup against his Japanese countryman going 1-for-1 with two walks. Maybe it was an act of respect when Senga, the Mets’ rookie right-hander, walked Ohtani on four pitches in the first inning. Maybe Senga just didn’t want to see what Ohtani could do to his vaunted forkball. Variations of the pitch are common in Japan, though to be fair, Ohtani can hit just about everything.Senga (10-7) issued only three free passes throughout his 6 2/3 innings appearance, two of which went to Ohtani. However, it was Ohtani’s third-inning double that ultimately doomed Senga and ...Orioles closer Félix Bautista exits win vs. Rockies with right arm discomfort: ‘That’s never a good feeling’

Orioles closer Félix Bautista exited in the ninth inning of Friday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies with right arm discomfort, manager Brandon Hyde said after the comeback win.One strike away from a save, Bautista fired a 102.3 mph fastball for a ball to Colorado’s Michael Toglia. The 6-foot-8 right-hander fell off to the first base side after releasing the pitch and squeezed his right hand multiple times after he regained his balance. The Orioles convened at the mound, with head athletic trainer Brian Ebel and other members of the Orioles’ staff tending to Bautista. After a minute, he exited the game. Left-hander Danny Coulombe replaced him and needed just one pitch to strike out Toglia and save the 5-4 victory.Hyde said he would not discuss the extent or nature of Bautista’s arm discomfort. The fifth-year manager did say Bautista wasn’t dealing with any ailments and that his All-Star closer “felt good” before the game.“B...Betts sparks Dodgers rally in return to Fenway as Red Sox lose 7-4

Mookie Betts stepped to the plate and tipped his batting helmet to the crowd, acknowledging the raucous ovation he received from the sellout Fenway Park crowd in his first at bat back in nearly four years. Then, over the next three hours, he and his new Los Angeles Dodgers teammates showed the people of Boston what they’ve been missing.Betts went 1 for 4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in his return to Boston, sparking what wound up being a pair of three-run rallies to help the Dodgers charge past the Red Sox for a 7-4 win. He also started at second, and after moving to his more familiar position in right field caught Connor Wong in no man’s land on the bases to cut short Boston’s best chance to mount a late rally.Freddie Freeman also put on a show, going 4 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.Since being traded in early 2020 Betts has cast a long shadow over the Red Sox, and fairly or not Alex Verdugo has shouldered much of that weight. One of the player...Shohei Ohtani doubles to key 2-run inning as designated hitter vs Mets after tearing elbow ligament

NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s right elbow was fine until he tore his ulnar collateral ligament with a 94 mph fastball to Cincinnati’s Christian Encarnacion-Strand on Wednesday, according to Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin.Baseball’s two-way superstar was back in the Angels’ lineup as a designated hitter Friday night against the New York Mets, two days after the injury ended his season as a pitcher and clouded his future months before he can become a free agent. He hit a 115.4 mph double that one-hopped the right-field wall against countryman Kodai Senga, keying a two-run third inning. Ohtani also walked three times and grounded out in the Angels’ 3-1 win. He received huge cheers from the crowd on Japanese Heritage Night when he walked to the plate in the first inning and tipped his helmet twice in response.Mets manager Buck Showalter was booed by fans for ordering an intentional walk to Ohtani with runners at the corners and two outs in the nint...Shooting investigation underway at Guaranteed Rate Field
