High school football: Lavontae Cox’s emergence has Central oozing with optimism this fall

Central High School running backs coach Jamal Galato first watched Lavontae Cox tote the football when Cox was in eighth grade, playing at Oxford Community Center.IMG_3601Cox immediately separated himself from his peers.“He was running the ball and had a couple of cuts, in eighth grade. That amazed me,” Gelato said. “But I was like, ‘OK, let me see it in high school.’ ”And, sure enough, the following year Cox impressed in practices as a freshman. But despite Gelato’s best lobbying, Cox wasn’t a factor in the varsity backfield. But that changed last fall, finally, after injuries pushed Cox into a prominent role, and the tailback took off. Highlighted by a 176-yard outburst in Central’s 20-7 section semifinal upset of Highland Park, Cox ran for nearly 1,000 yards, and added 300 more receiving, last season to help spark the Minutemen’s late-season surge into a section final.“They kept telling me, ‘Coach, you’ve got to look at this young kid. You’ve gotta look at the young kid,’ ” Centra...

Speedster Esteury Ruiz joined an elite list of A’s with 50 stolen bases on Sunday, then quickly picked up stolen base No. 51.But that was the lone highlight for Oakland on Sunday, as the White Sox beat the A’s 6-1 to split the four-game set on the south side of Chicago. After leading off the sixth with a single, Ruiz stole his 50th base of the season off of the first pitch White Sox starter Mike Clevinger threw to Ryan Noda. When Ruiz beat Chicago catcher Yasmani Grandal’s throw to second, he became just the eighth player in A’s franchise history to steal 50 bases in a season, and the first since Rajai Davis swiped 50 bags in 2010.Ruiz didn’t wait long to break his tie with Davis, stealing base No. 51 after Noda popped out and with Zach Gelof at the plate. The stolen bases helped turned Gelof’s deep fly out to left field into a sacrifice fly, scoring Oakland’s only run of the game. The Athletics players who have stolen 50 or more bases in a season are Rickey Henderson (who did so nine ...

SANTA CLARA — Nick Bosa’s contract holdout from the 49ers offers a stealth benefit if it drags into Tuesday.Bosa does not count on the current 90-man roster nor will the 49ers need to save him a spot on the initial 53-man list, which is due Tuesday at 1 p.m.Because he did not report when the 49ers opened training camp July 25, Bosa was placed on a reserve list, and he continued to work out at his offseason home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.That could benefit one bubble player on the roster bubble, such as an injured one who must make the 53-man roster before reverting to Injured Reserve and remaining eligible to play in the coming season. Candidates who fit that profile: tight end Cameron Latu and wide receivers Ray-Ray McCloud and Danny Gray. The 49ers still must cut more than a third of their roster. Aside from Friday’s trade of quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys, staff reductions began Sunday with this unsurprising wave: cornerback Nate Brooks, linebacker Ky...
