Stillwater prison on lockdown for eight hours Sunday after 100 inmates reportedly refuse to return to their cells

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 01:34:35 GMT

The Stillwater prison was placed on emergency lockdown Sunday for about eight hours after about 100 prisoners in a living unit declined to return to their cells, according to a Minnesota Department of Corrections press release. No injuries were reported and the peaceful protest, which began about 8 a.m., ended by 4 p.m.David Boehnke, a spokesman for the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, said that prisoners are protesting because they have no air conditioning and fresh water in their cells, are not allowed to take showers, and are only allowed out of their cells for an hour a day. The IWOC is a union for the incarcerated fighting for prison abolition. In addition, Boehnke said, visiting days have been slashed from four days a week to one. He blames these restrictions on administration shortcomings and a staffing shortage crisis that has been going on for years. The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) reports that the situation at MCF-Stillwater has been resolved without i...

Biden team isn’t waiting for impeachment to go on the offensive

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 01:34:35 GMT

WASHINGTON — Just before 8 p.m. Thursday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted a video of herself at a town hall in her Georgia district declaring that she “will not vote to fund the government” unless the House holds a vote to open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. It took just 68 minutes for the White House to fire back with a blistering statement that such a vote would mean that House Republicans had “caved to the hard-core fringe of their party in prioritizing a baseless impeachment stunt over high-stakes needs Americans care about deeply” like drug enforcement and disaster relief. The White House, as it turns out, is not waiting for a formal inquiry to wage war against impeachment. With a team of two dozen attorneys, legislative liaisons, communications specialists and others, the president has begun moving to counter any effort to charge him with high crimes and misdemeanors with a best-defense-is-a-good-offense campaign aimed at dividing Republicans and ta...

Unseasonably rainy weather pelted Lake Tahoe over Labor Day weekend during one of the region’s most popular times for tourists, and forecasters predicted a significant dip in temperatures at the beginning of the week.Near-freezing temperatures were in the forecast for Monday morning, which Mark Deutschendorf, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Reno station, said “has happened [before], but it’s still well below average.”Tourists who were planning to soak up the sun one last time before summer ends were set to wake up to temperatures near the 30s and 40s Monday morning.Nearly an inch of rain fell in Tahoe on Friday and Saturday, and the cool, cloudy weather continued on Sunday, with showers and potentially a thunderstorm expected through the night. Kylian Mbappé scores 2 goals as PSG routs Lyon 4-1 in French league

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 01:34:35 GMT

PARIS (AP) — Kylian Mbappé’s two goals put him top of the French league’s scoring charts as Paris Saint-Germain won 4-1 at struggling Lyon on Sunday for its biggest success of the season under new coach Luis Enrique. The glossy-looking result should not disguise the poor quality of defending champion PSG’s opponent. PSG’s first goal was a carelessly conceded penalty, two were counterattacks and the other was a goalmouth scramble. All of PSG’s goals came in the first half against a dismal Lyon side. Captain Corentin Tolisso had complained about his team’s performance last weekend, but failed to control a pass from his own goalkeeper and then clumsily hacked down PSG’s Manuel Ugarte for a clear penalty. Mbappé struck it cleanly down the middle past Portugal goalkeeper Anthony Lopes in the fourth minute, even though Lopes got a leg to it. After right back Achraf Hakimi bundled in a cross that Lyon’s defense failed to deal with in the 20th, attack...
