Why do Californians pay so much more for gas than other drivers?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:27:49 GMT

Gasoline prices in California edged higher again on Tuesday, hitting an average of $5.84 per gallon - a little over a penny more than Monday’s average, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).Drivers in metro Los Angeles are paying an average of $6.14/gallon, nearly 80 cents more than a month ago and 30 cents more than a year ago as gas prices tread dangerously close to L.A.'s all-time record of $6.50/gallon from October 2022.For comparison, drivers in southern states such as Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Alabama only pay around $3.30/gallon.So why are gas prices spiking now? And why do Californians always pay more?In the short term, AAA says global oil prices have risen to more than $90 per barrel while demand also continues to rise. At the same time, domestic gas stock has declined slightly. So, some of this can be attributed to the basic economic law of supply and demand. However, in Southern California, experts say regional -and political- fact...

Read more Letters to the Editor.Tuition hike will putcollege out of reachRe: “Tuition rises 6% annually over next 5 years” (Page A1, Sept. 14).As a student enrolled in a California State University (CSU), the 6% tuition spike annually for the next five years is outrageous. This change will affect students for generations to come, especially those in the lower to middle class.College cost does not only include the tuition as the cost for college adds up from textbooks, housing and commuting. The tuition hike will raise the economic floor needed for entry into college, and the hike will exacerbate the growing student debt crisis. The 9-0 vote by the CSU trustees is a stain on college education affordability for those looking to study in California. There should be other methods to narrow the funding gap, but one of those methods should not be a tuition hike that will negatively impact the livelihood of prospective and current ...

Residents skeptical after toxicology report finds no ill effects from Martinez refinery incident

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:27:49 GMT

Nearly a year after the nearby refinery showered the city of Martinez with 20 tons of metal-contaminated dust, residents are still asking what went wrong, and how so many failures could occur in succession. On Monday evening, Contra Costa County Health department officials tried to address some of their concerns when they offered the first opportunity for public comment on a toxicology report studying whether the spent catalyst release had made the city’s soil unsafe.Community members, however, say they’re not satisfied.Although the results of the report were first made public in June, the meeting felt like an effort to extend an olive branch to a community that believes the refinery and the health department need to re-earn their trust.“We value your opinion and want you to feel empowered,” said Matt Hoffman, the deputy director of the Contra Costa County health department. “We really want to have the community involved in this process.”The report stems from an incident in Nov...
