JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The biggest project in Gov. Mike Parson's budget request to lawmakers this year was to widen parts of Interstate 70, but that funding could be at risk. The governor wants to spend nearly $900 million to add an extra lane on I-70 in the suburban areas of Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbia, but some representatives have other plans, like diverting that money to improve Interstate 44. Back in January during his annual State of the State Address, Parson revealed his support of a major project, that comes with a hefty price tag. "For years, congestion, traffic accidents and delays have become serious issues for commuters on I-70," Parson said during his address. "We are requesting $859 million, the largest investment in decades, to wide and rebuild the I-70 corridor and take the first steps in adding a third lane across our state." Alameda County Department of Children and Family Services workers failed at nearly every turn to protect 8-year-old Sophia Mason in the last 14 months of her life — breaking more than a dozen state child welfare regulations and later falsifying records to cover their tracks, according to a lawsuit filed by the family against the county Monday.“It’s horrifying — not only did they fail to protect Sophia while she was alive, even in her death they’re failing to admit mistakes that they made,” said Carly Sanchez, an attorney for Sophia’s grandmother, Silvia Johnson. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Alameda County Superior Court, comes just over a year after Sophia’s body was found decomposing in a bathtub inside a house more than 100 miles from her childhood home. It echoes the findings of multiple investigations by the Bay Area News Group in 2022 that uncovered deep deficiencies in the county social workers’ handling of Sophia’s case and revea...

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – There may be a breakthrough in slowing or stopping the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. A drug trial is underway at UCSF and at medical centers across the country to see if giving a drug before symptoms occur is what’s needed to keep people functioning at a steady level as they grow older.“We have been trying to find ways to reverse the disease or to slow down the disease for almost 50 years now,” said Julio Rojas, a neurologist at UCSF.  East Bay police department offering $75K hiring bonus Rojas says the drug Lecanemab has been shown to reduce the amount of amyloid plaque in the brains of dementia patients, and while those who took it in a previous study had less severe cases, they continued to decline. This new trial is for those who do not have Alzheimer’s yet but have significant levels of amyloid plaque.“The question right now is, what if we offer these treatments that we know are effective in people with dementia? Now, one East Bay police department is offering one of the largest bonuses in the country. The Alameda Police Department says its staffing is down nearly 30% from where it should be. That is why, by a unanimous vote, the Alameda City Council recently adopted a temporary recruitment and hiring incentive.  Rendon suspended for altercation with A’s fan "The bonus right now is $75 thousand dollars for anyone who wants to be a police officer. As far as we can find, this is the largest hiring incentive in the entire country,” said APD Chief Nishant Joshi. The authorized staffing level of 88 officers for the department has not changed, but the number of cops in uniform has decreased from 73 to 64 in 2022.
