Due to their size and weight, mega-ships are fueled by heavily polluting fossil fuels. These fuels emit air quality pollutants that harm human health and add greenhouse gas emissions that disrupt our climate.2. Excessive dredging for channel and basin widening and deepening will irreversibly disturb marine and coastal ecosystems, threaten wildlife and impact the bay’s water quality.Ports must prioritize development for industry decarbonization — including electrification and zero-emission fuel bunkering for shi...

One of the Bay Area’s largest homeless shelters is set to open in Redwood City, a key milestone in San Mateo County’s ambitious plan to move everybody off the street. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, local officials and project backers touted the 240-unit “navigation center” east of Highway 101 as a cost-effective and “dignified” model for getting unhoused people into lasting homes, as pressure mounts to solve the Bay Area’s worsening homelessness crisis.“Let’s all celebrate today this opening, with the hope that other communities in the Bay Area will follow the lead of San Mateo County and the city of Redwood City to end homelessness throughout our region,” said billionaire Silicon Valley developer John Sobrato, who helped plan the project. The center, at 275 Blomquist St. in a commercial and industrial area near Redwood Creek, will provide residents with private rooms and bathrooms, as well as onsite medical, mental he...

Read more Letters to the Editor.Powering homes withcars is nothing newI had to smile today when I read the lead story, “How your car can power your home.” (Page A1, April 17) Heck, we were doing that with a Land Rover 30 years ago when we lived in Tanzania. We were on the faculty of a theological college where the voltage was “220 volts plus or minus 220 volts.” Seriously.Because of this, I put together a system of battery chargers, golf cart batteries, an inverter, and a collection of meters and relays that stored power when it was available and automatically switched over to power lights, computers, music systems and whatever when it was not.At times, though, the electricity deserted us for several days and things went flat. That’s when we started the Land Rover and ran cables into the battery pack. It wasn’t fast, but it was reliable.Eventually, we broke down and bought a generator. But Land Rover was there before Tesla.James Bangsun...

Read more Letters to the Editor.Coyote Valley openspace must be protectedRe: “$22 million deal will preserve huge ranch” (Page B1, April 5).I’m glad to see Peninsula Open Space Trust has purchased the 1,958-acre Lakeside Ranch property adjacent to Coyote Valley. Green Foothills was proud to lead the Protect Coyote Valley coalition, which successfully campaigned for all of Coyote Valley to be zoned for open space and agriculture in 2021. POST’s purchase helps create a permanently connected corridor of open space where wildlife can cross the valley safely.Sadly, a few Coyote Valley landowners are still trying to pave over their land rather than steward it responsibly. A few are suing the city of San Jose to try to get their land rezoned for development and seeking permits to build an energy facility there. This is unfortunate. Coyote Valley’s rural landscape protects our groundwater and buffers against flooding, allows local ...

Clutch like a Fox: Sacramento guard wins new NBA award

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 00:48:21 GMT

It was a tie game in Orlando on Nov. 5. De’Aaron Fox got the ball with about five seconds left, took four dribbles and let a shot fly from just inside of midcourt as time expired. Swish, for the win. A clutch moment — one of many for the Sacramento guard this season. Fox was announced Tuesday night as the inaugural winner of the NBA’s clutch player of the year award, as selected by a panel of 100 writers and broadcasters who cover the league.Miami’s Jimmy Butler was second, and Chicago’s DeMar DeRozan was third.“You can’t be afraid to fail,” Fox said on the TNT broadcast of the announcement. “Obviously, you’re not going to make every shot, but my teammates, my coaches, they put me in position to succeed. So the least I can do is have confidence in myself to take good shots.”Fox became Sacramento’s first individual winner of a major award since Tyreke Evans held off Stephen Curry for rookie of the year in 2010. The Kings almost certainly won’t ...

Warriors in rare territory, trail Kings 2-0 in NBA playoffs

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 00:48:21 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Klay Thompson pondered the Golden State Warriors’ current playoff situation and expressed some relief. In years past under the old best-of-five format, the defending champions would have been on the brink of elimination trailing 2-0. Thompson, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have never been in the hole like this, down by two games — and this is a group that has practically seen it all over the past decade while capturing the franchise’s first championship in 40 years with the 2014-15 title and three more since, reaching the NBA Finals in five straight seasons from 2015-19 along the way.But the upstart Sacramento Kings, coached by former top Warriors assistant Mike Brown, who helped Golden State accomplish so much, are coming to Chase Center on Thursday night for Game 3 of the best-of-seven first-round series with some serious momentum.“Luckily, it’s first to four. It’s not the old format where it’s first to three,” Thompson said, “...

CINCINNATI (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Jeffrey Springs was placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a left elbow flexor strain that may require Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old Springs, a breakout star during the Rays’ 13-0 start to the season, met Tuesday with Dr. Keith Meister, who specializes in the elbow ligament replacement procedure.“Obviously, he’s going on the IL with an elbow issue,” manager Kevin Cash said before Tampa Bay’s game at Cincinnati. “I think in fairness to Jeff, he’s still processing the information that he’s gotten. He met with the doctor. So I think we’re a day or two from him coming up with a decision on what is ideal for him and then a timetable from there.”Tommy John surgery would end Springs’ season.Springs left after throwing two pitches in the fourth inning Thursday against Boston. He threw a 79.8 mph changeup and a 83.5 mph slider to Justin Turner, then looked at his hand and elbow. His injury was initially diagnosed ...
